Some thoughts about Memorial Day. It brings back many memories for me walking through the New Bern Cemetery and the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Many relatives buried there. Overseas gazing at the many white crosses in the United States Military Cemetery near Manila, Philippines. The largest of the overseas cemeteries. 17,000 buried there. 17,000 who didn't come back from the war. And so we remember. In the Bible we read of Joshua setting up memorial stones after they passed through the Jordan River on dry ground. He said to them, These stones shall be for a memorial under the children of Israel forever. And so today we set up stones in cemeteries to remember loved ones. I'm also reminded of another memorial in the Bible. The Lord Jesus, as he instituted the Lord's Supper, said, This do in remembrance of me. This is one of the things that he asks us to do to remember him. And we do this each time we break the bread and drink the cup. Yes, remembering is important to us. Yes, and to God.
