Last night I was up on top of a mountain at Covenant College on top of Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. We have some folders about the conference, and we'd like for all of you to take one, even if you don't see how you can possibly come. Because if you want to start praying for the conference and thinking about it, the Lord just might enable you to come and be with us. And of course, even if you can't come, we will appreciate your prayers. And this is one conference that we can guarantee you that you'll have a mountaintop experience. Because see, the conference is on top of a mountain. Not all conferences can guarantee that. But we can guarantee you that if you come to this conference, you'll have a mountaintop experience. We can also almost guarantee you that every morning when you get up, you'll be above the clouds. Practically every morning you're above the clouds. And the sun comes up and drives the fog and the clouds away between you and down in Chattanooga, and you can see for miles and miles around. And as I said last night, it's one place where I can compare the food, honestly, with Park of a Palm. But I don't know of any other two places where you can do that. as well. The food is very, well, there's only one drawback. I will tell you this. If you're on a diet, you'll have to ask the Lord for willpower and for grace. The food is served buffet style three times a day. And it is, actually, if you're not hungry, if you go in there, it'll make you hungry, just to see the way they have it paired and the way they serve. That's been a real joy for me to be here along with Dottie this weekend. We'll be leaving tonight about eight, forty, forty-five to drive maybe a hundred, a hundred and fifty miles back up towards Columbia and spend the night in a motel and then hope to get on back to Columbia around one or one-third tomorrow. And my wife, because, you know, wives can't understand all the ins and outs of why husbands do things. She doesn't know how much I have to do tomorrow before I can go to bed. A lot of those things that we didn't do this weekend because we're not there, they have to be done before tomorrow night. So that's the reason we'll be slipping out tonight, after the service, and drive up perhaps to Folkestone, Georgia, and sleep six to seven or eight hours, and then drive on to Columbia. But we have enjoyed being with you, and we shall look forward to returning the next time we're invited. I have a habit of not going to a place unless I'm invited, so... If the Lord has blessed your hearts at all through the ministry, if you'll invite us back sometime, we'll certainly look forward to being back. One of the greatest responsibilities addressed upon someone who has the privilege and the opportunity and the responsibility of standing in a pulpit like this is to know the will of the Lord concerning what the ministry should be. We've been much in prayer. It's what the Lord's... By the way, I wanted somebody to turn the air conditioning off just because these spotlights are on me. Is that what it is? Alright, well, we'll forget it. It's about ninety-eight degrees up here. I thought maybe somebody had turned the air conditioning off, but maybe it's just not quite as low as some would like it. So we've been praying constantly for a number of months. I see that? That goes, right there. When I get to heaven, I sometimes wonder if the man that invented collars and tithes for men is going to be there. But I suppose, since I have my glorified body, I wouldn't want to tell him what I thought of him, so it wouldn't really matter. But if I can meet him down here, I'm afraid that I'd have to tell him what I think of. And it would not be good. I'll be frank with him. It would not be good. But praise the Lord, with air conditioning you can even enjoy collars and time. Well, so much for that. You know, before I became a Christian and I didn't have time last night, actually several people asked me to give my testimonies. It would probably take several hours to bring in a lot of the little things, but I didn't bring out this, and this is so very pertinent and true in my life. I had a grave, and this is true of all unconverted people, I had a grave misconception as to what life was when you became a Christian. And I suppose this is because of the people who called themselves Christians that I had known before my conversion. I have an idea that when you became a Christian you couldn't have a good time. In other words, you can never joke or be gay or jolly or happy or pleasant. I thought you had to have a face like a Missouri mute. That's right. And your dad couldn't have a good time. That's why I hope and pray that the Lord will never allow me to get to the place where I don't really enjoy life and I don't really enjoy people. Because I wouldn't want anybody ever look at me and say, that's a man he's not happy and he's a Christian. because I found that real lasting joy and peace comes in knowing and serving the Lord Jesus Christ. So it's a real joy to seek to minister his word. I want you to turn, please, to page twelve hundred and eighty-four, if you have a Schofield Bible. If you don't have a Schofield Bible, you find the book of Titus. Titus, chapter two. And once again, I will read from the Williams translation, and most of you have the King James, and you will read from the King James. You'll be interested in knowing that when the new command in general at Fort Jackson, which is near where we live, and where our son is the lieutenant, When he was put in command of Fort Jackson, he called the chief chaplain of Fort Jackson into his office, and he said, Chaplain, I'd like to know, do you have Bibles in the pew in the chapel? And he said, No, sir, we don't. He says, Well, I want a Bible in every pew in every chapel on this post in one week. That was quite a big order. They have eighteen chapels, and they'll see three hundred men each. And so they got in touch with the American Vowels Society very quickly by telephone, and in a week they had the Bibles in the pews in Fort Jackson. This encouraged me, and a day when there seems to be a deep emphasis in many realms and departments of our country, in spiritual things, here's a commanding general of a large military installation who says, I want the Bibles available to the men in the pews in all of our chapters. Now, I trust all of you found Titus. You all know it's in the New Testament and so forth. And it's one of Paul's lovely little letters. Did you ever thank God that Paul liked to write letters? or that he faithfully wrote letters. You know, some people aren't very good correspondents. I live with one. Not a very good correspondent. I love her anyway, though. But we had our conference last summer up there on Lookout Mountain in And our dear brother in Christ, who I esteem greatly and highly in the Lord, Dr. Lewis Johnson, he says, Now, I'm glad Paul was a good correspondent. He says, Now, frankly, I'll tell you, I'm not a very good correspondent, and I couldn't refrain myself. I said, Amen. Every time we ever tried to get in touch with Brother Johnson to get him to commit himself to come speak at the conference, I had to end up calling him because he never got around to write a new letter. He said it was too busy, you know. Some people are better correspondents than others. It's just not their long suit of clothes, it's not their gift. Well, I'm so glad that Paul was a good correspondent. And he faithfully wrote these churches and these assemblies and these individuals in whose life he had had a great influence. Some of them he'd never seen before. Some of them he knew intimately, like this young man Titus and like Timothy. Like the assembly in Colossia, he'd never been there. But he wrote them a letter, and I'm so glad he did. Now this is one of Paul's letters that he wrote. This good correspondence, and beginning in verse eleven of chapter two. A very familiar passage, but it has a lot of pertinent, relevant truth for us this day. Beginning with verse eleven. For God's favor has appeared with its offer of salvation to all men in time, training us to give up godless ways and worldly cravings and live serious, upright, and godly lives in this world, while we are waiting for the realization of our blessed hope at the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus. who gave himself for us, to ransom us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people to be his own, his very own, zealous of good works. You must continue teaching this, and continue exhorting and reproving people with full authority. Let no man be little. I would like for us to thank for a few moments about the wonders in this portion. The first wonder that we're going to think about is a wonderful exhibition. Now some of you have been to exhibition. Some of you perhaps went to the St. Louis exhibition back when I was a little boy, but I've heard about it. Some of you might have gone to the San Francisco exposition. Some of you perhaps have read about and a few perhaps visited the Montreal exposition, which they are continuing to some degree in a limited way every summer. And a bunch of Christians there have an exposition And they're using the Moody Sermon some signs in French, and they show these films, and they've had thousands and thousands of people to hear and see the gospel in these films. And we praise the Lord for this. So there have been a lot of expositions, and it's amazing how far people will go sometimes to see something that is exhibited, something that is unusual. A few years ago, I took my two youngest sons, Stevie and Jimmy, with me, and we went up through Williamsburg and the oldest of the two. Jimmy is quite interested in history, and we'd like to encourage him in this, because I think it's a good characteristic and a good trait. And we spent two full days in Washington, D.C., just looking at some of the museums there, such as the Smithsonian. And a lot of these things were on exhibit, like the Spirit of St. Louis, for example. and Apollo seven, and Friendship seven, and a number of these missiles that have been around the orbit in orbit a number and number of times. They're exhibited, and it's interesting to go see something that's on exhibit. But the greatest exhibit in the world is told about in the Bible, when God exhibited to the world in the death of his son his love for the world. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whomsoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Someone has said that man knew a lot of things about God before Calvary, but he was able to learn more about what man meant to God at Calvary. than ever before. Someone has said that at Calvary, love was pushed through a prism, and that we could see all the facets and all the shades and all the different colors of love in all of its genuineness and reality on the cross of Calvary. So the cross of Calvary tells me that I am and that I was and that I always will be valuable to God. Yea, so valuable that God was willing, and we heard about this this morning from the, in the twenty-second chapter of Genesis, that God was willing to give his well-beloved friend that unworthy, sinful men and women might have life and might have life more abundantly. Now I'm sure that most of the people in this congregation this morning, in fact all of you I'm sure, have heard the gospel preached and explained and proclaimed sensibly and in every other way again and again and again. But I'd just like to ask you one question before we go to the next wonderful thing in Titus chapter two. What evidence is there in your life and in your walk and in your talk and in your demeanor and in your conduct and in your behavior? that will exhibit to you and to the world that you have been born of the Spirit of God, and that God certainly and truly has come into your heart and your eyes and made you a new creature in Christ Jesus. Because that is exactly what happens when we see ourselves as lost, guilty, helpless, vile, unable to do anything about our own salvation, unable to do anything about our relationship to God, hopeless and doomed and damned, on the way to a priceless eternity, but by God's grace, did there come a time in your life when you recognize your hopeless and helpless and doomed condition, and by His grace did you look to the man on the cross, Jesus Christ, and ask God in His name that He might save you by His grace. If this has taken place, if this has transpired, if this has happened in your life, has there been a change? Are you a different person today? Do you have different likes? Do you have different dislikes? Do you have different ambitions? Do you have different goals in life from what you did before? I have news for you. If you've been born again, if you've come into real personal contact with the Son of God, Jesus Christ, and he lives in your heart, you will be different because you're a new creature. your goals, your aims, your ambitions in life, the thing that you long for, the thing that you want to accomplish in your life will be different. Because the Word of God says, therefore, if any man be in Christ Jesus, he's a new creature. Old things are passed away. Behold, all things have become new. A wonderful exhibition on the cross of Calvary, the most wonderful exhibition in all the world. The next, a wonderful character. We read... here in this scripture about the great God and our Savior, Jesus Christ. Now I know how good a memory you have, but God has blessed me with a good memory, and I enjoy it. It's a real aspect of which we give God thanks. For some reason that I can't explain, as I mentioned the night or two ago, for some reason I don't seem to have as quite a good a memory as I had ten years ago. I don't know why, but I don't. But anyway, I still have a good memory for which I thank the Lord. But when I read this word, every time I read this, the middle part of this thirteenth verse, that great God and all the Savior Jesus Christ, my mind goes back twenty-one years ago. That's a long time. But I was in Westminster Abbey in London. For three months I had the joy of preaching the gospel in Europe and in the British Isles in the summer of nineteen forty-eight. And I was in Westminster Abbey probably three times during my various visits in and out of London. And there I spent some three to four or five hours. You could spend longer than that if you had the time. Because in this great, shall I use the word, show place. You have some of the greatest men of all time buried. And you have that naturalist epitaph and tablets and Marcos as to who is buried. Well, and I remember seeing in one of the names there, these wrong tablets telling who is buried in a certain place. And I saw the tablet saying, this is where George Frederick Handel was buried. And he gave the date of his birth and the date of his death. And we had the musical note there. They had the musical note there. I know that my Redeemer lived it. Well, that really charged me. Oh, man, that was tremendous. And then right next to George Ferry Kendall was buried, one of the famous statesmen of England. And those of you who know much about English history will remember this name, Edmund A. Spencer. And he was a real, genuine believer in the Lord Jesus. And in big, bold letters, on a bronze plate, Here lie the earthly remains of Edmund A. Spencer, awaiting the glorious return of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. And you know, right that moment I turned into a fanatic again. And I said, Praise the Lord. And the people around me thought I was off Morocco, you know, and looked like, who's the word of this? What's happened to him, you know? I couldn't hold myself in. It's kind of like the man in the meeting, you know, that you hear about him. He was kind of shabbily dressed, you know, and he was in kind of a refined church, you know, where they wasn't used to saying amen too much. And he was really kind of hooping it up, you know, kind of loud, praising the Lord, amen, hallelujah. And this rather wealthy lady looked at him, and he had holes in his shoes, and his clothes were kind of shabby. And she wrote on a little piece of paper, he said, She said, young man, if you'll keep quiet till the end of the service, I'll buy you a new pair of shoes. Or the man got the preaching away about the grace of God and the goodness of God and about how wonderful it was to be saved and be saved and know the Lord. And finally he said, shoes and don't you? Praise the Lord. You know, when you stop to thinking about the grace of God, it's hard to keep quiet. You've all, I didn't mean to tell this, but this bit explains exactly what I'm talking about, so why don't I use it? The colored brother, you know, had been causing quite a bit of disturbance in the church, and he was just loud, you know, he just all the time going on. Amen. Praise the Lord. Hallelujah. And so a committee was appointed to go wait on the brother. Talk to him about this. Quiet down a little bit. Now you're just making too much noise. You're disturbing the more sedate people, you know, the people that want more reverence and so forth. And they went out to the field where he was plying the horse or mule or whatever it was. And they stopped him and they had a little talk with him. And they were talking to him if he was plying along the field. And they told him about how they appreciate if he just kind of quieted down, you know. And he said, well, I'll tell you, brother, and he says, when I think about how good God's been to me, how he saved my soul, and how he gave me a little home to live in, and he gave me my wife and my family, and he started mentioning all the things that God had given him. He says, free, brother, and hold this meal while I shout. He just couldn't refrain himself any longer. How long has it been since you've stopped to take inventory of all the things that you have for which you can thank God? Have you done that today? Have you thanked God today for the land in which you live? Have you thanked God today for the freedom that we had to gather here and worship Him? Have you thanked God today that through His providence and grace, that you've been privileged to hear the word of God when there are countless millions who have never heard the name of Jesus? Have you stopped to thank God for that today? Have you stopped to thank God today that somehow by his grace you have heard of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ that he is a great God? That he is more than a man. He's not just a religion. He's just not the way of life. He's not the way sure. He is the way. The truth and the life. And what a wonderful revelation it is. when we realize that the one that we are talking about, the one that we love, the one that we adore, is more than a man. He is God. Yet he is a very God of very God. This morning at the breakfast table we were talking about several things, and the name of a dear friend of mine who is now in heaven, been that six years almost, the name of Bill Carl came up. Some of you who used to go to Boca Raton back in the early days remember Bill Carl. What a dear brother in the Lord he was. I loved him so, and I miss him. Bill Carl was saved out of the entertainment world. He cut a son's base at Met Opera. He was offered a contract, but turned it down because of his daughter's health, and he needed to go to a dry climate to live. So he moved to the West Coast. Bill Carl had a real, genuine found conversion experience in April of about nineteen hundred and fifty-one. And he had a son who was a graduate of the University of California, and then now he was in graduate school, and he was studying to be a graduate in psychiatry. And this son was not a Christian. And Bill had been converted now only a few days. And the son who was studying to be a graduate psychiatrist, doctor and psychiatrist, was on one end of the table, and Bill Carl was on the other. And he'd only known the Lord a few days. And this son of Bill Carl's, a young adult, unconverted, smart, he thought, well-educated, was kind of making fun. of Bill's profession of faith in Christ. And you know what God Yeville called the wisdom to say? He said, James, that was his name. He said, you know, I never heard of a psychiatrist that could go to a grave where a man had been buried four days and say, Lazarus, come forth. And a man that's been dead for days came forth wrapped in his grave clothes. He said, James, I never read or heard of a man that walked up to a pool where a whole lot of people were laying maimed and haught and blind. And he came up to a man that had been lame from his mother's womb for thirty-nine years and where he could say, get up and walk. And he was able to walk. And one after another, even though he'd been converted only a few days, the things that he'd learned in the Bible, he mentioned one thing after another, after another, after another, that God was able to do it that man couldn't do. Oh, I'm glad today that regardless of who the individual is, regardless of what the need is, regardless of what the problem is, The one that I worship and serve and the one that I preach is able to do what no man is able to do. He's able to change and to save and to transform and praise God. He's able to keep. He said, how does he do that? He does that by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit of God as we allow him to come and tabernacle and live in our hearts. Yes? Yes. It's a great exhibition. It's a great character. The next thing, it's a great gift. A great gift. Some of you that have heard me in other places have heard me give various illustrations about gifts. And the illustrations that one could give to illustrate this are the lower. I remember a number of gifts. that have been given to us from time to time or given to me, I remember once. I was with the Willys before they moved to Florida, back in Birmingham, and we'd gotten up kind of early to go to a prayer meeting. I suppose it was a CBMC prayer meeting, and when you get up early, you know, well, if you're a man, you're supposed to shave. Well, I did. But the trouble is, if you shave early, you have a five o'clock shower. And so after supper at six o'clock, I looked at my face and I was ashamed to walk in the pulpit. And Brother Bob said, here, use this. And he had me a little battery operated in a relical shape. And I stepped into the bathroom and in a few minutes, well, I look like a human again. I said, Shreya, that's a handy little gadget. So we went ahead and finished the meetings. And Brother Bob took me out to catch the plane. After then, on a Sunday afternoon, to fly back to Columbia, he said, Sharkland, I stopped by the Kmart of theirs or whatever it is yesterday, and I picked you up something I want to give it to you. You know what it was? One of those battery-operated and they're well-coached sailors. And you know, I didn't have to pay him for it. I didn't have to go do anything to earn it. You know why? It was a gift. Have you ever realized that salvation was a gift? And that you can't earn it, you can't gain it, you can't purchase it, you can't buy it. Salvation is a gift. And this is one of the most difficult things for millions and millions of people in the churches, especially of America, to realize today. Because you see, the devil doesn't want people to realize that salvation is a gift. He wants them to think they have to earn it. This is something. This truth is a truth that only the Holy Spirit of God, taking the Word of God, can make clear to an individual. It's a gift. For the wages of sin is death. That's wages. That's getting paid. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The verse, as I mentioned last night in my brief testimony in the lounge, that God used to bring me to himself, for by grace are ye saved through faith. And that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not a word. Let us get him in. Should both. There are many other verses. I suppose my favorite verse, I suppose most every preacher has favorite text. And one of my favorite ones is right here. And this is the record that God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life. And he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. Now how anyone can read those two verses and not recognize that salvation is all wrapped up in whether or not we've received the gifts of God and we have life in that gift. How anybody can stumble over that and not see that I do not know. Because it's as simple as the nose on Jimmy Durant's face. It's simple. Salvation is a gift and it's a gift of God and if you receive this gift you have life. and you have life more abundantly. A wonderful gift. We have still father in this little text that we've read, a wonderful word. Now when God saved you and you and you and you and me and all the others in the world that are saved by His grace, when God saved us, that was just the beginning. of his plan for us. I've often illustrated it in a message about how when I asked Miss Whitman if she wouldn't like to shorten her name and make it huge. Then I got in touch with a juror and signed my name and paid a down payment on a ring. I told about how he put the ring in a case, and then he put the case in a little box, and then on top of the box he put some beautiful paper, and on top of the paper he put a ribbon. Now, if I'd known as much about my wife to be as I do now, I would insist that the paper and the ribbon be blue. I mean, pink, excuse me. But I don't even remember then. It didn't matter. I didn't even know there was any difference between pink and blue back in those days. But there is. All right. Now, I paid the man for the ring. But all for the price of the rain, he gave me the cage, the box, the paper, and the ribbon. Now when God saved you by his grace, that was just the very beginning. That's the first installment of what he has gone to show upon you throughout all the endless ages of eternity. And so he began to work. He has purchased you with the precious blood of His Son. You are now His property. And at the very moment that He has purchased you, He begins a work in your heart. My wife was in a home here on the colony yesterday for just a few moments. We stopped in to rehearse Fong were used last night. And you should have heard. Oh, look at this. Look at this. Look at this. Look at this beautiful. You know what? She loves Purdy China. She's already told me about some places she wants to stop swimming in Columbia to see, you know. If she saw him on the road coming down here, and praise the Lord was in a hurry, and it was at night. But I don't know how we're going to get away going back. But anyway, she loves Purdy China. And back when I used to travel more than I do now, when I'd go to Victoria or Vancouver or Toronto or Ottawa or somewhere, I'd try to pick her up a cup and saucer. And I'd bring it home and I'd give it to her and it'd be a gift and it'd be hers. But you know what she did before she used those things? She washed every one of them. Now they were hers. She could use them, but you see, she couldn't use them till she washed them. The same way with you. God purchased you, redeemed you to himself, but before God can use you and me, he has to cleanse us. Now if I had time, I could really go into this. I wish I had time to develop it, but I don't. But I'll say this. The cleansing process in the life of a Christian, for the most part, comes in relation to the Christian's association with the Word of God. Now ye are cleansed through the Word which I have spoken unto you. For it all shall a young man cleanse his way. by taking heed that who, according to thy word. Now I'm aware of the fact that as you hear the word taught and as you hear the word expounded, that this can have a cleansing effect upon you. But beloved brother and sister, I trust that you do not depend upon what you receive seated in a pew in your church or chapel to cleanse you and to equip you for the Lord's work. I trust that you recognize years ago that you need to daily get into the book and to read it and to meditate upon it and to memorize it and to appropriate it in order that you might be cleansed by the washing of the water of the Word of God. There's a lot of things in this old godless, lustful, sinful, fleshly world that will defy you just in the course of an ordinary day. And I've often illustrated this, it's very simple and crude, but you remember in the physics laboratory or the chemistry laboratory in high school, maybe a college, when you used to pour water through a cell, when you looked at the water, in the beaker or the glass below it, you couldn't tell much difference just by looking at it. But if you look closely at the silver, especially if it was white, you could find where impurities and little articles and products and dirty things that were in the water had been caught by the silver as the water went through the silver. And the fill had been used to purify the water. And that's exactly what the Word of God does in my life and in your life. It is a purifying agent. And it cleanses us, as the Lord said in his word, with the washing of the water of the Word of God. And in this same book in Titus, the next chapter from where we've been thinking, we read not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us by the washing of regeneration. and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. Well, we don't have time to spend any more time on that because we have one other thought we'd like to bring to you. Not only a wonderful work, and it's a work of cleansing and preparation, but we have a wonderful people. My wife made a remark that I think is very true about talk of the palms. I heard Bob Willis speak in this respect, and I know that Dottie just picked it up because of what she saw. I don't think she heard anybody say it. She says, you know, sweetheart, talk of the palms is just one big happy sandwich. I thought that was put very well. One big happy sandwich. Well, and as I suggested, perhaps Friday night here, this family here is just a very, very small part of the whole family in heaven and on earth, and someday, someday soon. We, in this happy family here, in this local family, are going to be united with the entire family. And it's going to be wonderful. And the joy and the happiness that you experience here with other Christians is just a little drop in the bucket. And when you get to heaven, the bucket is going to run over. So praise the Lord. a wonderful people." And there's another thought that here it says, they are a peculiar people. Now unfortunately a lot of dear Christians have read that word peculiar and they have read it literally. And they thought they had to act peculiarly. And they have made a tremendous success. They've been very successful. Beloved? When you come to know the Lord Jesus Christ and your aims and your goals and your ambitions and your standards and your values are changed from that of the worldly man who knows not the Savior, the very moment your goals and ambitions and values change and you put your eyes upon him and upon his glory and his will. and plan for you the man who knows not to save you will say that's a very peculiar person. They just can't understand it. And don't let it bog you because they will never understand it until they too come to know the one that you come to know and love. It's most interesting on some occasions when you get to talking with a Christian that's a new Christian. And they have been led to Christ, perhaps, in a Christian woman's club or CBNC or something like that. And they're just new in the Lord. And I say, you know, I remember when I used to know so and so and so and I said, they are the craziest people I've ever known. But now that I know the Lord, I can understand why I felt the way that I did. because I didn't know the Lord Jesus. And my set of values and my standards in life were an entire difference from what they are today. And so this is a wonderful, a wonderful, wonderful people. And I have two other things, but we don't have any more time. But I'll tell you what they are, and you can study them in your private time or leisure time. A wonderful life. And last but not least, a wonderful prospect. Prospect. P-R-O-S-P-E-C-T. Prospect. What's the prospect? Grace, provision, protection, guidance. Wisdom here. Eternity with him there.
