Beloved friends, welcome to the continued meditation upon the greatest verse in the Bible, God's holy word. These words were spoken by the pure lips of the Son of God in John chapter three and verse sixteen. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. In our preceding message, we have the joy of considering the breadth of God's love, indicated to us by the opening words, For God so loved the world. Today we follow with the words that he gave his only begotten Son, considering now the length of God's love. We have emphasized that God's love is the greatest love in the universe and has embraced every person in the world. God loves every man, every woman, every boy and every girl, regardless of their color, race, nationality, and even their sinful condition. Take it in, my friend. How can such love be measured? In its length? Oh, my beloved, there is a simple and clear answer. Listen very carefully. The greatest love can be and is only revealed by the immensity of its gift, the greatness of the gift that is given. And in the words given to us, we read that God gave, who did He give? He gave His only begotten Son. Now first of all, let us realize something in contrast. He did not give an angel, for he had many of them. Neither did he give legions of angels to come and save us, nor any other creature. But he gave His only begotten Son. One who was the eternal and the dearest object of His own heart, To name other, any other than his only son we can never do. God certainly, to redeem your soul and mind from the wages and the eternal penalty of our sin, gave someone who alone was great enough and needed to save us from eternal hell. Frankly, emphatically, someone was needed large enough, great enough, to save us from eternal hell. I think of the words of Daniel Webster when once he was asked, Mr. Webster, do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? He made answer, knowing what a great and guilty sinner I am, that I need a superhuman Savior, I am bound to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Yes, my beloved friend, He gave us a superhuman Savior, His only begotten Son. My friend, this great necessity cannot be more emphasized as to our eternal need by the words that God writes in the book of Ezekiel. saying, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, God says. And again in Peter, second Peter chapter three, we read that God is not willing that any should perish. So God loved you and me so much and the whole world, that He desired to save our unworthy souls by sending His only begotten Son. Therefore, He gave His only begotten Son the greatest sacrifice He could ever make. The police take in, and this is very important, do not fail to take in how far the length of God's love has gone for you and for me. Now, when you think of that Son coming to the earth, Please do not stop at Bethlehem, where he entered into the world. Neither do not stop at Nazareth, where is the boy he lived. Neither stop at Galilee and all the land of Israel, where he labored so abundantly and did so much good, and healed so many diseases. Neither do you carry in the garment of Gethsemane, please. where he had his sorrowful experience before his subsequent betrayal. Do not even stop at the trial of Jesus when he was brought before Pilate the governor by the people and the rulers. Do not stop until you reach where? Calvary, the cross upon which he died. My beloved, the true, the accurate, The perfect measurement of God's love in its length, for you and for me and for everyone, must be Calvary, the cross upon which the Savior died. If I should ask in what way do you believe God has proved his love unto you, what would you say? May I state frankly, Many people think that because God showed some merciful and providential kindness to them in a time of difficulty and severity and trial, that was the token of his love. Well, perhaps, but that's not the perfect measurement. Listen to God saying, God commendeth his love towards us And note carefully, note the ground upon which he commends his love. Note the occasion to which he refers. Excuse me. God commends his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans five eight. Wherever you read the love of God in the Word of God, in your New Testament particularly, It will always lead you in the context to the death of Christ. Listen again to First John chapter four in verse ten. We quote the whole verse. Here in Islam, not that we loved God, but that He loved us. And sent His Son to be the propitiation, the sacrifice for our sins. Please let me say. God, to point out to you and me the length of His love, points us to Calvary. My beloved friend, if you and I would really know the length of God's love, we must go to Calvary. The death of Christ, God's only begotten Son, bearing our sins in His own body upon the tree, is the true measurement of the length of God's love. Oh, listen to the words of Peter writing by the Spirit of God. For Christ hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God. First Peter chapter three in verse eighteen. God so loved the world of sinners that he sent and gave his son to die to pay the penalty for our sins, to bear the judgment of our sins. What thought? to bring us back to God. God wanted you and me back to himself, my dearly beloved. And the Son went to Calvary. Listen to the words of dear Apostle Paul in Romans eight, saying, If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up. And where did he deliver him up? For us all? on the cross. Romans eight, thirty-one and thirty-two. Does not this prove conclusively how much God loved us? He did not spare the punishment upon his son. He did not minimize the penalty. He did not lower the standard of judgment, but he laid upon the son his beloved son the iniquity of his all. For all we like sheep had gone astray, we had turned everyone to his own way. But the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Oh, my beloved, may I say, that beloved's son, willingly, voluntarily, paid that debt of sin and bore the judgment, all of it for you and for me, Can I quote the words of another? All my sins were laid upon him. Jesus bore them on the tree. God who knew them laid them on him, and believing I am free. Without apology, my beloved friend, I ask, Do you know, will you accept the perfect expression? Will you agree to that which is the definite proof of God's love by going to Calvary? My beloved friend, you will never find a more satisfactory proof of God's love for you and for your soul only by going to Calvary. I quote the words of that dear old hymn, O the love that drew salvation's plan, All the grace that brought it down to man. All the mighty gulf that God did stand. At Calvary. Pardon there was, and mercy there in grace was free. Pardon there was multiplied to me. There my burdened soul found liberty. Where? At Calvary. My radio friend. I would not ask if you have gone to church. Or if you go to church, I've got a bigger, greater question to ask you. Have you been to Calvary? There you will find the length of God's love in no other place but Calvary. At the cross of the cross where I first saw the light and the burden of my heart rolled away. It was there by faith I received my sight. Now I am happy all the day. Let us pray. Our beloved and blessed Father, we have only one standard of measurement to know the length of thy love, and it has to be Calvary, the cross upon which thy beloved Son died to save us all. May someone look to him now and be saved, for Jesus' sake. Amen.
