Before we do this, I want to review some of the things we said last night. We were talking about New Testament evangelism. New Testament evangelism. I'd like you to say something that I didn't say last night because I didn't get to it. Whether or not we are evangelists as Christians is not left up to us. Every Christian has been commissioned to be an evangelist of the grace of God. Now, if a man is commissioned in the Army or the Navy or the Air Force, and he does not carry out his commission, it's a very pathetic situation. Sometimes his commission is taken from him. Now the law doesn't work like that. There are numbers of passages in the New Testament, in the Gospels and in Acts where Christians are minded. that we are to be his witnesses. In John, he says, as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And then in Matthew and in Mark, in the latter chapters, we have what is known as a great commission, where he speaks after his resurrection and gives that great permission to go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. And in Mark he says, he that believeth in his baptized shall be saved. But he that believeth not shall be damned. And I like that reference in Luke. where he says, And ye are my witnesses. And so it's not a matter of whether or not I want to be a witness. It's a matter of not a question of whether or not I am going to be an obedient Christian. Now, I must say this in all fairness, however. When the Lord made each of us, praise the Lord, he broke the mold. And he doesn't expect Bob Willis to be the same kind of a preacher or a witness that he does after he gives the Lester Wilson a herald machine. And there are some Christians that have a particular gift to do things a certain way. I think of a dear brother. I saw the other day, and some of you know him. I saw him up in the work of Congress. Brother Willie probably knows it. From up in West Virginia. Brother Arnold Robinson. Now, when the Lord made Arnold, he broke some old and praised the Lord. Just like when he made me, he broke some old. We're all different. But that fellow can reach people that we never would reach. So, if the Holy Spirit speaks to you tonight, and I hope he does, about your responsibility as a Christian evangelist. Don't try to think of any other Christian that you're going to copy as a soul runner or as a witness. Incidentally, many times it is some of our privilege to reach where other people have thrown. I've seen this happen many times. I'm going to write down right now an illustration that I'll use later in the message about what I'm talking about. I don't have it in my notes, but I thought of a wonderful example of where I had the joy of reaping once, where John McGee and Dr. Tom Parks had sown in Cincinnati. Now last night, we started off by reading in John's Gospel, and we read that wonderful verse there. verses in forty, forty-one, forty-two, and he brought him to Jesus. And we mention the responsibility that Christians have to those in their immediate families, their brothers, their sisters, their fathers, their mothers, their sons, their daughters, and their cousins and relatives. And then we call your attention to the portion of Scripture in Matthew's Gospel. For the Lord had called Matthew, and immediately after he called Matthew, he went and he ate with publicans and sinners. And his disciples did what they always did. when he did something that was a little out of the ordinary, something that they had not done. When he went a little over the line of the usual practices, they condemned him for what he did. And we called your attention to the fact that in order to win people to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, we must relate to them. and in order to relate to people, you've got to spend time with them. And in order to spend time with them, you've got to recognize that you need to spend time with them and plan to spend time with them. Once again, I reminded you that you say, well, what should we do? How should we go about it? Well, I'll tell you one more way to find out how you need to go about it. Get on your knees and ask the Lord. You don't need to go talk to anybody. Talk to the Lord. You know, the Bible is very, very private. The Bible says, you have not... The Lord said, Lord, what do you want me to do for you? How can I go about it? What will not and I may fit it in? And then we went to Abortion in Mars last night, and we saw that wonderful, beautiful picture of where these four men had a friend that needed to be healed. And where the man that needed to be healed had four friends. And how they proved their resources, and they brought him to the Lord Jesus. And as a result of a number of people becoming concerned about one individual, the one individual found the Lord. And then the last thing that we had time to look at last night was the example and that so many of them in the Scriptures of our Lord. And we looked at John four, at least we referred to John four. We reminded you that the Lord was on his way through Samaria. It was the shortest distance to where he was going. And the scripture said, and I'm glad the Holy Spirit said that, he must need go through Samaria. Now there are several reasons why he must need to go through Samaria. One was it was the way to where he was going. But there's a far more important reason than that. There was a woman there that was going to find her Savior and her Messiah. You know, God's ways are past finding out. And the way the Lord opens the door here and closes the door here and chops this and sends you here and does this. It's one of the most thrilling things in the world. And if you have never experienced the joy of seeing the Lord go before you and open and close doors and do this and that and lead you from place to place, you have something to apologize. In fact, Brother Andy, I want us to sing that song one night this week. Boy, Jesus is his heaven there. I'm requesting that you and I sing it. And I was thinking tonight, maybe one night, I might talk about heaven. But you know, I'm not really too concerned about heaven. You know why? I'm in heaven right now. Because ever since the Lord saved me the sixteenth day of June, nineteen hundred and thirty eight, five o'clock in the afternoon, eastern side of town, I've been in heaven. And if you're not in heaven now, friends, you see the book, I'm talking about the... intellectually and spiritually and mentally. If you're not enjoying the bliss of knowing Christ on this earth, either because you don't know him in your faith, or if you know him, you must not be living in close fellowship with him at all. One of them. One of them. Why Jesus is, is heaven there. And so we told you that because Jesus was tired and because Jesus was searched and because he had to go through Samaria to get to where he was going, He used this contact with this woman to point her to himself. Oh, I'm sorry. All right. Now, second Timothy. Chapter one. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy my beloved, our dearly beloved son, grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. I thank God whom I serve for my forefathers with pure conscience that without sleep and I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day. Greatly desire to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy. When I call to remembrance the unsane faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother unit, and I am persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance, if thou stir up the gift of God which is in thee by the putting on of my hands, for God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou thou for ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me is prisoner, but be thou the taker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God." And that's as far as we'll read. Do you find yourself remembering certain verses because of where you first heard it, who read it? I remember back when I first really got acquainted with CBMC, I was invited to a retreat on Long Island by Jim Colville. You know Jim, Brother Bob. And Waldo Yeager had been invited to come over as a speaker, and this is what he spoke on. God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love. I will sound much. I'll tell you, that's a good text for the day in which we live. But that's not what I'm talking about tonight. Go back up to verse five. I say that one of the methods of New Testament evangelism in the first Christian century was teaching and training and rearing and instructing boys and girls in the way of the Lord. And because of their teaching, and because of their instructions, and because of their admonitions, they came to know and love the Lord Jesus Christ. Now I would like to remind you that in the first Christian century they did not have any gospel on radio. I need not remind you that in the first Christian century they did not have any good Christ-sonist Bible-oriented Sunday school, Mr. Gil. I need not remind you that in the first Christian ministry, they did not have any Word of Life camps or Bible conferences or Christian camps or any child evangelism or rural Bible mission or children's Bible mission or what have you. But they did have some people that had been transformed by the grace of God. and they believed in the Old Testament scriptures, and they taught their children what was available from these scriptures, and they brought them up in the nurture and the admonitions of the Lord. And so I say then that one of the major facets and means and methods of bringing people to Christ in the New Testament church was through a Christ-centered, Christ-filled, spirit-filled, and led and guided home relationship. The fact that the busy day in which we live has caused so many homes to break up is one of the tragedies of the day in which we live. and one of the key toys weapons of the devil is to get Christians to think they are too busy to have family worship and family prayer and family Bible reading and family devotion with their children. When Brother Stan Ford was about ready to go back to England, after being over here six months almost, he told me something that just about shocked me out of my way. He said, you know, Brother, for you, most of the places I've gone and having meetings in different places. He said, I stayed in homes, of course. He said, would you believe it that if I told you that only in one or two of the homes that I stayed in since I got to America, has there been any systematic plan, schedule, or family work? And I can hardly believe it. He said they have no systematic plan. As far as I can tell, he said if they get together and pray and read the word as a Christian family, he said they must do it either before I get up or after I go to bed or something. He said they don't do it when we're at the mail table. That is one of the reasons for the breakdown of life in the Christian home. For now believe, beloved, what the Scripture says, Train up with child in the way that Kenny shall go, and when he is old, he will not depart therefrom. And I believe that as long as children I practice what I preach. As long as children eat the food that I buy, and sleep in the bed that I provided, and wear the clothes that I bought, if I say, Jimmy and Stevie, it's time for family prayer, bed talk. And they may not like to go to prayer meetings on Wednesday nights. They might say, well, we're the only children there, which of course indicates in our family, I'm glad you say. They go. Yeah, but brother, for you, haven't you known of mothers and fathers who taught that children and who prayed with their children and who taught them how to love the Lord Jesus as best they could? And don't you know of mothers and fathers who are Christians who have children that are unsaved? Yes. Different children are different. And what will work with one child will not necessarily work with another child. But that doesn't believe me of any responsibility. And you can rest assured that if you do your part, and you pray, and you set the example, and you live the life, that the memory of that godly home will never be erased from the heart and the mind of that child, no how far they may go. I've known boys and girls who've grown up in Christian homes and had a wonderful example in their homes, and they have gone away to college, gone out into the service perhaps, and never made any real indication of having had any impression made upon them about this. And once they got away from home, and they got into the service, into the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, or away in college, and they saw what kind of homes other young people came from, it really made them appreciate what they had in their home. So don't give up. you grandparents, don't get discouraged about your grandchildren. Keep praying for them and believe God to save them. The sexual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. The influence of the Christian home was mightily felt, I'm sure, in the New Testament church. And so that leads us up to the next one. It starts with a P and it ends with an R. There's a million other words. P-R-A-Y-E-R. Prayer. Now, not everyone is gifted to write the Gospel book with the track. Not everyone is privileged to stand in a pulpit. Not everyone is privileged to be able to speak over a microphone. Not everyone has the gift of hospital visitation. But here is one realm and one avenue and one channel, wherever. I heard of a dear thing of the Lord today. that gets up during the middle of the night and spends an hour or two with the Bible and on a knee praying for the Lord's work around the world. And I was really encouraged because that's what I'm talking about. And I think of some of you dear people here not able to be as active as you would like to be and as you once were. Oh, what a minute. What a ministry. And you know, Brother Bob, I'm amazed sometimes when I meet people, and for some reason the Lord has never impressed them with the tremendous potential of intercessory prayer. I got a letter from a dear friend of mine, well, you know him, George Nelson from St. Louis. And George Nelson wrote me, he said, I just wanted to encourage. And he told me about a man that the Lord had spoken to through some of our messages there one time. I didn't even know about it at the time. And he said, the man's gone on with the Lord. He's given his testimony and witnessing for the Lord. And he says, the Lord used one of your messages to say I'm on fire. And he told me about a lady. He said, this lady said, I've never thought of systematically praying for the Lord's servants until Mr. Hughes spoke on Christ. And he said, this lady gave me the name... of twelve servants of the Lord. And he said, Brother George, you tell Brother Chocolate that I pray for those twelve people every day. Oh, I never shall forget a gift saying of the Lord. I'm going to see him when I go to heaven. He's been in heaven now about ten years. And I used to go in and out of the Columbia Bible College back in the early days when I first moved to Columbia a lot. And the campus was downtown where it was convenient to get to. And I'd go in, and every time I'd see Miss Mabel Briggs, she'd catch me, oh, chocolate, I feel proud of you every Tuesday. Every Tuesday. Has the Lord ever impressed upon you the tremendous potential of intercessory One of my favorite verses is the first verse on the tenth chapter of Rome. And if you want to see the heart of a man, look at that verse. I love it. Most of us know it by heart, I hope. If you don't, be a good one to memorize before you go to bed tonight. Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer God for Israel is that they might be saved. Now let me tell you how it works. Tell you how it works. In Columbia, South Carolina, there's a young man there by the name of Jim Wilson. He's about twenty-five or twenty-six years of age. He was born and raised in a religious home where Christ is not on it. People were rather religious, so you didn't know the Lord. But you see, Jim Wilson was an insurance agent, and he worked in an office where there was a Christian. And the Christian had enough sense not to cram the gospel down this fellow's throat, because he just wasn't the interested kind. On occasion, he'd give them a little track, and he said, Jim, I just want you to know that I'm praying for you. I'm praying that you'll come to know the Lord. And for three years, he prayed for me. And September of number one, Jim Wilson had gone out to call on a client. I bought some insurance. And the client didn't buy it. He was a little discouraged. came home, his wife Esther, was in the bedroom, put the kids together, to bed. Excuse me. He flipped on the ten-eighths. And what do you suppose comes on the screen? That's right. From Anaheim, California. And his first impulse was, I'll turn to something else. He said, no, I'll look at it. I'll tell you what. And he watched. And he listened. And the prayers of E.C. Goulet began to be answered. Because he listened. And he listened. And he listened. He really gave an invitation and said, you lay out there in the radio land and viewing on television, no matter where you are, you too may trust me. Jim Wilson said, I didn't know what I was doing, but I did what he said to me. I slipped to my knees, but I beset you. And I said, oh God, I'm a sinner. I cannot save myself, and I believe that you died for me. Saving in Jesus' name. Amen. He wrote down the address, what he said right. He wrote off. He didn't say a word to his wife about it. because he didn't know whether anything had really happened or not. He didn't feel all that different. So one day goes by, two days goes by, three days goes by, and the fourth day, he got up and went to breakfast, and Esther said, Jim, I've got a question to ask you. He said, what in the world is? She said, well, I want to know something. He said, what is it? She said, she said, what in the world? that's happened to you. Well, what? What do you mean? She said, she said, you're different. You haven't cursed me. You haven't hit at one of the children. You haven't lost your temple in four days. I've never known you to go that long without losing your temple and slapping one of the children or getting mad at me or complaining about the burnt toast. She said, well, I didn't tell you because I wasn't sure what I was supposed to or not, but I think maybe I've been converted. What? Converted. How do you get converted? Well, you know the other night when I came home and you were putting the children to bed and I watched the telegram? Yeah. Well, he told me how I could receive Jesus Christ into my heart and I think I must have. And I've written off to get material. She said, well, I know one thing, you're certainly a different man. You're a different man. Well, that encouraged Jim so much, he went the next day, and he went to work, and he said, hey, E.C., I got something to tell you. He said, you don't have to tell me. He said, I knew it four days ago, but I wanted you to have the privilege and the blessing of heaven. And they went into a quench and plowed on one another's shoulders. And then E.C. Goli got him into the Word, got him into the Scriptures, and got him studying the Word, got him going to the Gideon, and through the Gideon, He met Dr. David Johnson from our assembly in Columbia. And by that time, Billy Graham's film for Pete's sake was coming to Columbia this past fall. And so Dr. Johnson brought Jim Wilson along to the council training classes. And Jim Wilson learned how to deal with men and women and how to get into the scriptures and how to point people to Jesus. And the first person that he wanted to know, oh, by the way, his wife was saved two months after he was saved. The first person Jim Wilson led to the Lord besides his wife. was his twenty-two-year-old sister. And then you know what happens? The twenty-two-year-old sister had a husband, and her husband found the Lord. And you now know what's happening? Those four young people are praying for the mother and the father who don't know the Lord. That's the way God hears and answers prayer. All right? Now let me tell you an illustration of how somebody plants a seed. Somebody else has the courage of reaping the harvest. In Cincinnati, Ohio... When John McGee was alive, and Dr. Tom Parks lived there, they had a little child evangelism meeting in, I think, maybe Betty McGee's home. And there was a family they had by the name of Mary. And I was there once for a meeting, and this was many years ago, probably ten or twelve years ago. And they asked me to do some visiting for them. And so I went to this particular home. They said, now, the married children are coming to the Sunday school and to the child evangelism class. Why don't you go see the marriage? So I went by. When I got there, Mrs. Merritt was vacuuming. She had a half-were off-sided. She had a chest seal in her hand. And she had on short, short, short, short. And I said, Ms. Merritt, I must have few from the Northern Hills Chapel. And I came by. Let's see if I could visit you and look to marry. Well, I'm very sorry, look to you, but we're busy right now. Could you come back some other time? Goodbye. That's the way the door went to your house. Well, they continued to pray. And they continued to pray. And they continued to pray. And they continued to pray. And would you believe it? Now, this is one of those very interesting coincidences. To what it is it is. One year later. One year later. I was going from Chicago to Columbia, and you had a daytime layover in Cincinnati. And so I wrote Brother John. I said, Brother John, it looks like I'm going to have a day to spend in Cincinnati, a week out the next. If you've got some people that need to be visited, maybe in the hospital, I'd be glad they had visits for you. And when I got there at eight o'clock in the morning at the old Union Station, some Christians met me. They took me to the McGeehy's house where I had breakfast, and they gave me a list. And John said, Shockley, there's three people I want you to see. But the first place I want you to go is to see Ralph and Ruth Merritt. Oh, I said, oh, no, I don't want to go there. Oh, it's going to be different, I believe. Well, Shockley, a few weeks ago, Ralph Merritt almost lost his life in an explosion at the Procter & Gamble factory. And he's been in the hospital, and Brother Tom Parks and I have been visiting him about once a week, and... He's been more receptive to the gospel. And I just believe that this is just the time for you to go see it. But we had prayer. And I went. And I rang that bell. It was here in Tremley. And Miss Mary came to the door. Oh, yes. Oh, Mr. Yes. Yes. Come in. Well, Rath is not here. He's gone up to the Seven-Eleven to get some milk and a paper. But he'd be backing him in. I know he'd be glad to see you. Come in, Mr. Hughes. And it's less time than it takes to tell. That fine young couple slipped to their knees and received Jesus Christ into their heart. And that was only the beginning. They went out and bought him a Volkswagen bus. And inside of one month, on the telephone, Ruth Mary had already witnessed to her old classmates that she'd gone to hospital with and led three of them to Jesus. They started a crowd evangelism class in their home. They started branch Sunday school. And there are people all over Cincinnati that that couple has read to the Lord. In fact, I didn't know this until a few weeks ago. As a result of Ruth Mary coming to the Lord, Betty McGee started a Bible class. And the Bible class has gotten to the Lord. You can't have it anywhere but in the chapel. Two and three hundred ladies coming out to hear the Word of God. every Thursday morning. Why? Because somebody prayed, somebody witnessed, and the Lord gave the heart. But there's another way that people were brought to Jesus Christ in the New Testament church. And you know how that was? Precious! Precious! Oh, they had these beautiful, big buildings with stained glass windows and all, and knives, organs, choir. No, they didn't. They didn't have any buildings. All they had was Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. And you know what they did? They didn't do it the way we do. They didn't take people in to hear the gospel. They took the gospel out to where the people were. That's still God's method. That's the way he's used. That's the way he's using the gospel today. And the world will never be evangelized until we get back to the New Testament pattern. And the New Testament pattern is for every believer to be an evangelist and for people to take the gospel to the people. The marketplace. The prison. The farm. The office. Wherever people are, take the gospel. Now last night I mentioned the Coral Ridge Church in Fort Lauderdale. Jim Kennedy was a young man just graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in the King of Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. And he went to this little church that had seventeen members down in Fort Lauderdale. When he got down there, the Lord burdened him about teaching his people to do man to man of anger. And one of the first things he learned was that he didn't know how to teach his people to do it because he didn't know how to do it himself. Well, he got on his knees with the word of God, and he asked God to teach him to how to deal with individuals about their souls on a man-to-man, person-to-person basis. Then he asked God to give him one person in his church that he could teach. And he did. Then he asked God to give him another one. And he did. Then he asked God to give him another one. And he did. And then he started a method and a program of teaching people who knew Jesus Christ and were in his church. to get into the Word of God, to learn how to give the plan of salvation, to learn how to answer questions, and to go out and visit unconverted people and approach them with the carrying of Jesus Christ. That church has gone from seventeen members to upwards of three thousand in a few years. And all it is is New Testament evangelism. That's all it is. Christians today, to keep abreast of what's happening in the world, and use any legitimate means of propagating the gospel. You know what I have observed as I travel over the country? I have observed that many of the New Testament type assemblies that are really going have numbers of men and women in their fellowships that are active in evangelical fellowships other than the local assembly that are reaching men and women for Christ. It's a Christian woman's club, Christian Venice Men's Committee, Jews for Christ. campus crusades, Hitcherbasket fellowship, child evangelism, children's Bible mission, Bible memory and soul segments, or have you. As long as it's people that are even gullible and love and know the Lord Jesus, we can work with them. And one of the things that blessed my heart and soul is the fact that all over America, everywhere I go, I hear a group, little indigenous groups, sometimes not associated with any particular fellowship, springing up, studying the Bible. More in coffee. By the way, brother, do you have caught with your mouth open? In your book so. Well, you ought to have that book or felt better than tears of joy. Winnie Christensen is a housewife in Chicago, and the Lord gave Winnie a burden. to invite some neighbors into her home and open up the Word to them. And the Lord has blessed that lady in a marvelous way. You don't have to be a professional Bible teacher. All you have to know is to know the Lord, to love His Word, to believe His Word, and to know how to give the plan of salvation. There are even little booklets that are printed today that are available for some fifty or seventy-five cents on how to start a neighborhood Bible class. They even have a little outline that you could follow. And I dare say from what I've been able to gather and pull up in my head that there must be sounds of these independent neighborhood copies is what they call them, you see. But they're really just independent Bible classes throughout America today. Only Tatham down in Palm Beach has had a very, very marvelous minute in these coffins. The hearts of people are hungry for the Word of God. Now, people are not interested about that last night. They're not interested in the church. They're not interested in religion. But if you talk about a person, Jesus Christ, you'd be surprised, too, man. And they want to see reality. They want to see reality in my life and in your life. When they see the reality in your life and in my life that the unconverted people fall in the first Christian century in the lives of those apostles, then it is that you're going to see people come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Some of you might remember an article in Letters of Interest last September by my friend Kevin Dyer. The name of the article was, Stop the Men. I want to get off. I think I read it five times, because I agreed with it. He made the suggestion that in some places it might be a good idea instead of having a gospel meeting in the chapel today on Sunday night, especially in a large metropolitan area, if you'd get two or three couples together in this neighborhood and two or three couples together in this neighborhood and have three or four different Bible classes in a home and get people in to hear the Word of God. I say this is one of the most effective methods of evangelism in the day in which we live. Alright, now in closing, let's review these points. One is our responsibility to bring our relatives to Christ. Two, we've got to spend time with people. We've got to relate to people. We've got to get involved with people. We've got to be willing to do for people. We've got to be willing to love people. We've got to be willing to learn to know people. in order to part under the faith. Three, sometimes it means that two or three or four or five individuals are going to have to pool their resources and team their resources in order to bring one individual to Christ. Four, we're going to have to do what the Lord Jesus did at Jacob's well. We're going to have to use the natural, logical, ordinary conduct that we have with individuals day by day as a means are pouring people to Christ. And then again, we're going to have to spend time in prayer. Don't ever make the mistake, beloved brother or sister. I'm going to talk to someone about the Lord. I know, first of all, he talked to the Lord about that individual. And last but not least, men and women are going to be one to Christ because we have proclaimed to them their untouchable riches of the Lord Jesus Christ by personally sharing with them what Christ means to us. But if Christ is not a reality in your life, you'll never be able to share him with someone else. But if Christ is the love of your heart and you're really in love with him, it would be as natural as ABC. for you to share with someone else what Christ means to you. Shall we pray? Well, we pray I might mention that tomorrow, perhaps even tonight, and once in the morning, you might want to read the thirty-seventh Psalm before the meeting tomorrow morning, perhaps the night of tomorrow morning, the thirty-seventh Psalm. Our Father and our God, we thank you that you never commanded us or commissioned us or requested even that we do anything but what you have empowered us with the power to do. We thank you that we don't have to go out in our own strength. We thank you that we don't have to pray in our own power. We thank you that you are able and sufficient to do all that you have asked us to do. You've never asked us to walk in your road or to go up any trail or any route for what you've already been before. Now, Father, let us know that you use different people in different ways. And, Father, let us know that you use some of us to plant the seed, and then someone else has a joy of coming along and reaping the harvest. And, Father, if that's what you want us to do, that's what we're glad to do. We just want to be a cog in your wheat. If you want us to be the rug that someone else walks on, that's all right with us. So we just pray that you use us in the way that it brings the most honor and glory to thyself. Father, there are many of methods in evangelism that we didn't have time to mention.
