Good morning. Time again for moments of melody. Here's the way some people would probably write the twenty-third psalm if they were writing it today. Science is my shepherd, I shall not want. It makes me to lie down on foam rubber mattresses. It leads me on four-lane highways. It leads me into the psychiatrist's office for my ego's sake. And even though I walk through the valley of the hydrogen bomb, I will not fear it. The jets and the atomic bombs, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of the world's billion-hungry people. Thou anointest my head with home permanence. My alcoholic cup overflows. Surely pensions and social security... shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the old folks' home forever. Well, now let's read the real twenty-third psalm. The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou prepareest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest my head with oil. My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. I found a friend when life seemed not worth living. I found a friend so tender and forgiving. I can't conceive how such a thing could be that Jesus cares for each. Each day, each year my faith in him is growing. He's ever near, his love is overflowing. I have no fear, my worldly cares are few. I can depend on him to see me through. I've found a friend, he can be your friend too. And now the Gospel according to Dr. Luke. The Lord Jesus speaking. Among yourselves, if a father is asked by his son for bread, will he give him a stone? Or for a fish, will he give him a snake instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he give him a scorpion? Why then, if you, evil as you are, know well enough how to give your children what is good for them, is not your father much more ready to give from heaven His Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. It's wonderful to have such a heavenly Father, and to be able to say the Lord is my shepherd. science may fail, people may fail, but the Lord will never fail. He's the one of whom we can say, surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
