There are seven texts with good cheer in, and I want to read them. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer, it is I be not afraid. John sixteen. John chapter sixteen. And verse thirty-three. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world. last four are all in Acts beginning at chapter twenty three in Acts chapter twenty three in Acts verse eleven And the night following the Lord stood by him and said, That is by Paul, Be of good cheer, Paul, for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome. Chapter twenty-seven. All right, and verse twenty-two. And now I exhort you to be of good cheer, for there shall be no loss of any man's light from among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am and whom I serve, saying, Fear not, Paul, thou must be brought before Caesar, and lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer, for I believe, God, that it shall be even as it was told me. In the final one, verse thirty-six, then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat. You'll notice the seven references here to good cheer, and I think that's the only time you'll find them in all your Bible. those seven references to be of good cheer. Many, many years ago I spoke on five of them, but I didn't notice the other two until just this last week. Last night, possibly about ten o'clock, I was thinking about the seven texts, and I always like to try and alliterate them, or line them up with the word beginning with the same letter. And it was quite easy. They seemed to fall right in line. The first one, you have pardon, the good cheer of pardon. Be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the second one is a connection with the Lord's presence and the Lord's power. Here you have in connection with the Lord and is walking on the water. Be of good cheer. Here's the Lord's presence of the appropriate time. It is I be not afraid. So you have good cheer relative to His presence and His power. Then you have His peace. Be of good cheer. He says, You'll have tribulation in the world, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world. Then you have the fore in Acts of the Apostles. You have the be of good cheer in reference to protection. God says, Paul, I'm going to be with you. As you have borne testimony of me here in Jerusalem, thou shalt also bear testimony of me at Rome. I'll protect you until you're through your witness and your testimony for me before Caesar. And then you have the next one. And it is the good cheer of prongs. There shall not be the loss of any man's life. So cheer up, Paul. This storm that we'll be speaking on next Sunday morning, Lord willing, is not going to have any casualties. There will be no drowning. So be of good cheer. Just cheer up. And then you have the good cheer of persuasion. Paul was persuaded that what God had said, God was going to fulfill. I believe God that it shall be, even as it was told me. Then you have the final one, provision, because they were in need of food. And the Apostle Paul had thrown a lot of things overboard, and they had a little food left. And so Paul gave thanks, and he told them, that here is food. Now he says you need this for your body, and they were of good cheer, for God had provided for them, God had met their need. And so you have these seven good cheers. You have pardon, you have peace and power, you have God's protection, and God's troubles, and God's for Apollo's persuasion, God's provision, and thus you have them lined up. Now getting back to the first one, be of good cheer as to the forgiveness of sins or the pardon that you can have for all your sins. If the story is told more in detail in Mark chapter two, here's this man and he's got a case of palsy. And the multitude is surrounding the house where the Lord Jesus Christ was, and four people. We do not know who they are. Their names are not given. Quite often in the Bible, God does give the names of the individuals who are doing something for him, something important. Their names are given, especially in the Acts. Quite frequently, you find out who did this and who did that. But oftentimes, too, in the Scriptures, no name is given, just to say, He was born of four. Now these four men, we do not know whether they were relatives, but their names are not mentioned. And yet they did something wonderful. It indicates their concern for this palsied man. It shows there's some sympathy in the human heart. And although there was a multitude straining their necks to get a peek at the Lord Jesus, all could not get into the hunts, and so a great crowd surrounded this house. But here was this man. We know not how far he was from the house, but there he was a palsied man. And four of the crowd looked upon, and thought, well, here's this fellow. We have good health. He's palsied. He's on a stretcher. Or in those days they called him a bed. Let's get him in. And so they... proceeded to get this man into the presence of the Lord Jesus. Well, they had their problems. There had to be four, like two at the front and two at the rear. How were they going to get him in? First of all, the problem of the crowd. A great crowd was around the house. And then once they got through the crowd, how were they going to get him in? why the doors were jammed that possibly they only had one or two doors, and whether they had any windows, possibly they were not big enough to get this man in through the window. Well, what were we going to do? Anyway, these men used their heads, and there was an outside staircase, which was often the case in the eastern still is, so they got up on the roof. Actually, in all those homes, you'll find an outside stairway going up onto the roof. So they thought, well, we'll get him up here. It means a little extra effort. But we'll get him up on the roof. And they got him up on the roof. And we'll get him down through the roof into the presence of the Lord Jesus. Now, this is going to be quite a problem. We just don't know where the Lord is inside that house. How they found out, we do not know, but they did let the man down to the very feet of the Lord Jesus, so they knew where he was standing. How they got this information, we are not told. Undoubtedly, there must have been quite a clatter up on top of the roof, and it wasn't Santa Claus and his reindeer's either. It was poor men, and they had this one man on the stretchers. and they're going to get him down through. Now that meant some axes or hammers of some kind, and they proceeded to break up the roof, and they had to get quite a hole in the roof. And you can imagine the people inside the house and the people around listening to all this clatter. What disturbs! What are these people trying to do? But evidently the Lord wasn't complaining, very patiently, as the whole was made large enough, and these four men left this man down. Now how they did it, don't ask me whether they had ropes or something of that nature, or whether there were men on the inside who were willing to help. But finally they got this man down at the feet of the Lord Jesus, this palsy man. They went through all these difficulties, all these obstacles, to get this man out, and their names are not even given. It speaks of those quiet, unannounced, unadvertised workers, oftentimes who bring people to the meeting, trying to get people to the feet of the Lord Jesus. Of course, so often the preacher gets the credit when someone gets saved. But what about the person unknown, who brings someone to the meeting, who witnesses that person week after week, gives them a track, works with them, prays for them, may be a loved one, and finally they succeed in getting that person to come and sit under the sound of the gospel. To sit under the sound of the gospel is tantamount to putting a sinner at the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ. where he's in touch with the Son of God and what the Son of God can say and what he can do. And so finally they get this man down at the feet of the Lord Jesus. I wonder what kind of an expression must have been on this man's face. Possibly by this time he was somewhat bored. With all the difficulty these men went through. and evidently it wasn't a very pleasant experience. He was a palsied man. He was at their mercy. He couldn't tell them not to do it. He couldn't prevent them. He didn't have the strength to do it, although we might have asked them to go easy. But there must have been an expression on the man's face, anything but encouraging, anything but optimistic. Maybe it was an expression of disappointment. Maybe it was an expression of doubt. Well, after all this trouble, what's going to happen? It was then that the Lord Jesus said to this man, Be of good cheer. Don't look like that. Don't look discouraged. Don't look cast down. Don't look doubtful. Be of good cheer. Cheer up. Thy sins be forgiven. Well, the four men who'd gone to all this trouble would say, That's not why we brought him in here. That's not why we went to all this trouble. We wanted his body here. He's got the palsy. That's what we were interested in. That's what we were driving at. And the Lord pays no attention to the man's physical condition. He says, Thy sins be forgiven. The Lord puts first things first. God is interested in your soul. He's not so concerned how crippled or bent your body is. He wants to put first things first. He's interested in your soul. He wants your soul saved. He wants your sins to be all forgiven. He'll take care of the physical. When you die or when he comes, he'll give you a body like unto his own glorious body. But to have that blessed hope of a body like his, a painless, ageless body, you're going to have to have your soul saved. And this is what the Lord Jesus teaches us here in this passage. Cheer up! Thy sins are forgiven thee. And that's His message to do you this morning. He wants to know if your sins are forgiven. Of course He knows. He just wants you to realize if they're not forgiven. And have your sins forgiven. and receive a pardon. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, all other things. Better health for check, or materially, these other things that you're putting first, these other things that have priority in your life over the Spirit. The Lord says, Don't worry about those material things now. I want to put first things first. You get your soul saved first. Seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and these other things will follow. These other things shall be given unto you. And so this morning the Lord has a pardon for you. And the cheer up the person. Cheer up thy sins. are forgiven you. I'll pardon you for everyone. I wonder if you have received this pardon yet in your life. Oh, but you say, my sins are too many. My sins are too bad. I don't think the Lord could forgive all my sins. I don't deserve it. You're just the one he wants. and Eve can forgive every sin from the first one to the last one. And he says, cheer up, sinner, I know exactly all your sins. I know with whom those sins have injured and hurt and who's been involved in the committing of those sins. I know the whole story. But cheer up. I'm going to give you a pardon. I'm going to forgive you all your sins. I remember reading one time about a boy from Pennsylvania and he had run away from home. His parents lived on the farm and he ran away from home and he didn't know where he walked. He got into sin in one of the big cities. He didn't have any money. He was ashamed to go back to his parents because They were such fine parents, Christian parents. But he finally got fed up with the world. He got fed up with the life he was living. He thought of his loving parents and what they had taught him and their comfortable home he had left. Now he's in rags. No good clothes to wear. And his conduct was abominable. He thought, well, I think my mother and dad would take me in. And he finally was able to do a little work to get enough money to pay his way on the train back home. Back in those days, most people traveled by train. So as the train was nearing the station of the little town that was not far from his home, he hadn't the nerve. He just hadn't got the courage to get off and face his parents with the way he had lived. So he passed this little village and went on to the next. And then he began thinking, I wonder if they'll receive me. I know they've heard all about me and what I've done. So he thought of something. He wrote a little note to Mother and Dad. Mother and Dad, I know all that I've done to hurt you. I know I've broken your heart. And I wanted to come home, but I haven't the courage to get off the train. And I'm going to take that trip back to the town, our hometown. And Mother and Dad, if you'll welcome me, unforgive me, Will you do this, hang a sheet out on the line? And if I see that sheet, I'll get off." He waited two or three days till he knew they'd got the letter, and then he caught the train again to go back through. And by when he got inside of his home, the mother must have not only gotten all the sheets in the house, but tablecloths as well, and the whole line was strung with tablecloths and sheets. In other words, there was an abundant pardon, an abundant welcome waiting for their son. And how it thrilled him when he saw what he was going to receive. His parents made it clear they were going to forgive him for everything. Pardon and give him a new start. Friend, God has hung out every possible sheet. He's given every possible indication. He'll give you a royal welcome if you'll come, just as you are without one plea, but that his blood was shed for thee. And this morning God loves you. Be of good cheer. Come just as you are. He'll not turn you down. He'll accept you. He'll pardon you. He'll forgive you. many years ago when B.L. Moody was preaching the gospel, and in that day he was like the Billy Graham of today, a very prominent preacher. Billy Graham was having meetings in Chicago, and the governor was going to attend or go to the prison where Moody was having these meetings. He was going to go to the prison that day, and offer a pardon to a certain prisoner because of the occasion. Of course, Moody didn't know who was going to get that pardon, but the Governor sent it to Mr. Moody and told Mr. Moody to give this pardon to the one whose name was on it. Now, Mr. Moody, he got up before that audience of criminals. In Raleigh, North Carolina, they used to have a place where a thousand of them sat. I've been there. Warden on Honeycutt said, I thought it's a crowd. We have the lifers, the mergers, the ones waiting on death row. We have them right at the front on the special guard. But that morning, Moody got up before this audience of criminals. He says, I have a pardon from the governor for a certain prisoner criminal in this audience. A pardon from the government. You could have heard a pin drop. There was a hush that descended on that audience of pardon criminals. Who could it be just to what everyone would say? Oh, I hope it's me. I hope it's me. And as Moody read, the pardon slowly and then the name. There was a shout from the back and the prisoner said, That's me! And I'll tell you, he came down that aisle and he took that pardon at all. He was grateful to the governor. And it was a pardon with the authority of the governor behind it. It was a real pardon. After that service, D. L. Moody had the joy of leading that criminal to Christ, showing him that just as the governor had granted him a pardon for all the sins the crimes he had committed, he didn't pay for it, he didn't pray for it, it was given to him. So God has offered a pardon to whosoever will. And friend, let me say this, your name is on. It's to whosoever will this pardon. And that includes you. You can put your name down. Whatever your name is, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Smith, or some other name. This pardon has your name on it. It's to whosoever will. Will you accept it from God himself? His son paid the price. He purchased it. He took your place. He went into that cell where you were in, that you might go out. He took your place. He paid the penalty that you might go free. Cheer up. Don't think you're too bad to be saved. God loves you, and here is your pardon. Then the next one is in Matthew, fourteen, twenty-seven. Hear the Lord Jesus. It was down from the mountainside where he had spent the night. And he starts across the sea. The disciples had left the shore a few hours before. He knew there was a terrible storm raging. He knew just where the boat was out on that rough sea. And he began walking on those waves. The rough waves meant nothing to him. But all of a sudden, he got close enough to the boat. They could see him. They were afraid. They thought it was a sprint. He says, Be of good cheer. It is I, be not afraid. They had a right to be afraid. The possibility of them all being drowned and the boat half full of water. Yet, He says, Be of good cheer in his eye. Here is his presence and his power. Be of good cheer in his eye. Be not afraid. Today you're sailing rough waters in life. Your little boat is being tossed about and beaten. The Bible says the wicked are like the troubled sea when it cannot rest. whose waters cast up mild and dirt, there is no peace, saith my God to the wicked. Oh, the troubled hearts today in this troubled world, what a storm is raging. Last night I read some literature that came in the mail, and this man said, how many young students he has met in the last few years. who were at the point of its drugs or suicide. They were so disillusioned, fed up with everything. I'm either going to go on drugs or I'm going to end it all. Life's pretty rough. And it describes some of the things that many were passing through. The mother with five children, in a poor apartment infested with rats, not knowing where the next crumb or crust of bread was coming from to feed her children. What was she to do? Where was her hope? I know it was pitiful to think of the condition many people live in today. Let me say the Lord knows all about it. He knows the storm that's raging. the ups and downs of life, like that little boat being kicked about on that angry sea. And he appeared, he said, the imprint shield. Cheer up, it is I. Be not afraid. Well, who are you? Oh, I'm John Knox, the Cuban. I'm John Knox. I'm John Westland. I'm D. L. Newton. I'm C. H. Spurgeon. Well, that's too bad. You'll just be one more liability if you get in the boat. No man, I don't care who he is, is able to bring an end to the storm and give peace to the human heart. He said it is high. It all depends on who the eye is. The eye happened to be the Lord Jesus Christ. it is I being not fresh. And you know what happened. There was a great calm. There was a great calm. He ironed out the sea just like you'd iron the wrinkles out of a sheet with a hot iron. And there was a great calm. Friend, let me say, if you haven't Christ, you have a reason to be afraid. He said, It is I. Be not afraid. Without Christ, you have grounds to be afraid. There's so much going on in the world. Afraid of death. Afraid of meeting God. Afraid of the coming again of the Lord Jesus Christ. Afraid of the possibility that the Spirit of God will cease striving with you. Fraid of the consequences of your sins? Yes, and afraid of Satan, because he's subtle and he's scheming to bring about your eternal punishment. Yes, you have a right to fear him. Be not afraid of man. Some are. The fear of man bring of the snare. You're afraid to accept Christ. because of what people might say in the office or what your buddies might say or what your neighbors might think. Don't be afraid of them. My mother said something to me, and I have mentioned this many times. She knew the pull my companions had on me. She said, my boy, your companions will laugh you into hell, but they'll never laugh you out. Your companions could only go to your graveside and bow their heads in a little respect, but where's your soul that they helped to put it where it is? Yet men and women today I'll put their pals, their friends, their companions before Jesus Christ. I hope you'll not be caught in that snare. The fear of man bringeth a snare. Be not afraid. this morning. Rather be of good cheer. The Lord is wanting to exercise his power. Here's his presence. He said it is I. And then he calmed the seed. There's his power. And the Lord is here this morning in his word. And he wants you to realize. And he wants you to experience his power. He'll bring peace into your little heart. The good cheer of His presence and His power. Will you this morning come to the Lord Jesus Christ? He'll calm your heart just as He calmed that seed, and you'll have peace, sweet peace, the gift of God's love. Then you have the third one, It's over in John chapter sixteen and thirty-three. Here were the disciples in that upper room. My, how afraid they were, because many had been, their leader had been put to death and many had been put in jail. And here were the few disciples, the close followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. And if their leader the son of God had been put to death, what would the authorities now do with them? Here they were clustered together in that upper room filled with fear, for it says the door was shut. They were afraid. Afraid of footsteps, lest they be the footsteps of a Roman soldier, a centurion, coming to get Ben, and do to them what they had done to their leader. and full of fear, when all of a sudden the Lord Jesus Christ appeared in their midst, he says, Be of good cheer. In the world you're going to have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world on how that, true that is. You have your choice, in fact you have both. In the world you have peace, but also tribulation. Even Christians have that. But in the midst of tribulation the Christian has peace. And he also gives you the assurance that he'll overcome. In other words, he'll enable you to overcome. Be of good cheer. In the world you're going to have tribulations. But, oh, do. Cheer up. I've overcome the world. And that is so. There is no earthly sorrow that doesn't have a corresponding joy. There is no earthly pleasure that doesn't have an earthly pain. You have to take the one with the other. Even Christians know this. But the Christian has something the unsaved person doesn't have, and that's peace. Down deep in the heart, there's that inner peace, that undisturbed peace. And this consolation, well, they persecuted my Lord, and he was sinless. He was perfect. And yet they persecuted him. They put him to death. And Christ says, Marvel not if the world hates you. It hated me before it hated you. And if it hated the Lord Jesus, who was perfect and sinless, I can understand it hating me. And the more you become like Christ, the more you're going to get persecuted. For the world doesn't like to be rebuked. When a person tries to live for the help of God a clean, upright life, a godly life, a Christ-like life. I'll tell you that person's the object of persecution and sometimes even hatred. But the Lord says, don't you worry. I suffered the same. You'll be of good cheer. I'll give you greatness to overcome this. to endurance. And remember the final conflict. I'll deliver you from that, too. You'll be an overcomer. And you'll find that word used quite a few times in Revelation chapter two and three, where the church is referred to. He that overcomes, he that overcomes, he that overcomes, the only way we can overcome. by knowing our Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and our Lord that oh you may be passing through deep waters dark hours you may be passing through loneliness be of good cheer Christ says don't let it get you down be of good cheer I can help you to overcome I can enable you to rise above the good cheer of His peace. Then you have the good cheer of His protection. What wonderful protection. The Lord made it clear to the Apostle Paul, Paul, I'm going to protect you. You have suffered much, I know. You bore faithful witness to me at Jerusalem, but I'm going to see through it that you're going to bear witness to me in Rome, even before Caesar, the Emperor. And Paul be of good cheer. They're not going to hurt you. I'm going to be with you. I'll be with you on this voyage, and no one will be able to do you harm. And the Lord tells us the very heirs of our head are numbered. How wonderful to know that we're so close to him, those of us who were saved. Here is the good cheer of protection. Protection. He'll protect. Then you have the good cheer of promise. And I think this is lovely, this good cheer of promise, of persuasion that we have, or the promise verse. What does he say? He says in his promise in verse twenty-three, There shall be no loss of any man's life. Now they're on board this ship going to Rome, possibly two hundred and thirty-some men. A terrible storm is upon them, called Eurocleton, that we'll be speaking on next Sunday morning. And it's a terrible storm. Few ships ever went through those storms. And God appeared to the Apostle. He says, Paul, be of good cheer. There will not be loss of any man's life. My, that was a comforting message, wasn't it? There will be no loss of life. I want to remind you of a text. The Lord Jesus says, and none of them is lost. Speaking of his sheep, his people were born again, none of them is lost, but the Son of Prediction, Judas, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. Here is this wonderful cheer! Be of good cheer! I've got God's promise and He's promised I never perish. I give unto my sheep eternal life, and they shall never perish. Do you think you can be lost again, Christian? Do you think there's a possibility you might not make it after all? You're such a failure. Would you say I know I have accepted him? I know I was born again. I know I've passed some death and delight. But sometimes I get depressed, I get discouraged, I get full of doubts. Maybe I'm not saved after all. Maybe I'll be lost. Maybe I can lose my salvation. The Lord says to you now. Be of good cheer, I've given you my word. I promise that not one member of my body will be lost. And none of them shall be lost, says the Lord Jesus Christ. And that was that wonderful promise that the Lord made to the Apostle. There will not be the loss of any man's life. But of the ship. Yes, the ship's going to be destroyed. But no man's life's going to be lost. And I'll tell you, this old world's going to be destroyed. But there will be not one soul, not one man, or not one woman, who has been born again, washed in the blood of Christ, who will ever be lost. Their salvation is secure. They have eternal life. They shall never perish. That should cheer up every Christian. Then you have also the good cheer of Paul's persuasion for his faith. He says, I believe God that it shall be even as it was told. I believe God that what he says is true, exactly true, and I'm going to believe it. And that was his persuasion. I believe God that it shall be Even as it was told. What do you believe about God, friend? He says he'll forgive all your sins. And if you believe, it shall be. He says he'll give you peace. If you take it, it shall be. Are you persuaded? He says if you accept him, you have everlasting life. And it shall be. He says you'll never parent if you're born again. And it shall be. He says if you trust him and him alone, you'll pass from death unto life, and it shall be. You'll pass from darkness to light, if you accept him with all your heart, and it shall be. Yes, it shall be. He said, I'm persuaded of it. It can't be otherwise. He says he's going to come again and thank God it shall be. No man can change. I noticed Gray in one of his editorials this week, in a very sarcastic way brought out because of the election. He said, why? People have been talking about the coming of the Lord. I had been talked about for a long time, and he more or less made fun of it. You know what I did? And he even wrote, he pointed out the fact that Jews are going back to Jerusalem, but he made a little slip. He says they've got their temple, they haven't. They don't have their temple yet. He better get acquainted with the Bible, so much as he knows. But he mentioned some other things about the common market that people are applying to prophecies. I picked out the article and I put across the bottom, Mr. Gray, in the last time scoffers shall appear, say, Where is the promise of his coming? For all these things have happened, as the Father's tell us here. There's news for Mr. Gray and all others who belittle the coming again of the Lord Jesus Christ. They themselves are a good sign. His coming is near. Be of good cheer, Christian, and don't let the writings of these unbelievers and scoffers in any way rob you of the joy of the coming again of the Lord Jesus Christ. He says he'll come, and he will come. It shall be. The dead shall be raised, he said, and it shall be. He says, you'll be with me, you'll be like me, forever and shall be. Paul says, I believe God, that it shall be, even as it was told. That's Paul's persuasion. And I want to ask you this morning, friend, do you believe these things? Do you believe all that I've mentioned, that you can have forgiveness of sins, peace with God, everlasting life? You'll never perish or pass from death unto light, from darkness into light. Do you believe all that? You say, Well, no, I don't. Then you're not saved. For if you are saved, you know these things. And if you don't believe them and don't have them, you've made God a liar. For he that believe have not have made God a liar. But if you really believe God, all these are true, blessedly true. And you can be full of cheer. Praise God. I'm safe. I'm safe forever. I'm waiting. for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Here's the cheer up of divine persuasion. I believe God that it shall be even as it was told me. And then the final one which was told, the provision. How they were provided for you. You'll notice that remarkable verse in verse thirty-six. We'll read verse thirty-four. Wherefore I pray you is saying this to the crew. All the sailors, wherefore I pray you to take some meat. For this is for your help, for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you. When he had thus spoken, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all. When he had broken it, he began to eat. Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat. Physical provisions. God takes care of the body as well as the soul. All this is yours this morning in Christ. Be of good cheer. Cheer up. I've got pardon. Cheer up. I've got His presence and His power. Cheer up. I've got His peace. Cheer up. I've got His protection. I've got His promise. And I am persuaded that all this is mine by grace through Jesus Christ. And in addition, he even considers my body. He gives me food to eat and clothes to wear. Don't we have a right to be of good cheer? We do. And if you don't know these things, I hope You'll come into the full enjoyment of them this morning, except Christ, and leave the little chapel full of good cheer. Shall we pray? Our Heavenly Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we commend ourselves to thee. We thank thee for thy word. How wonderful thy word is. And we bless and praise thee for it.
